Sunday & Statistics #3

Let's catch up with the Statistics of this blog. Since we last reviewed the number, nothing has changed for the Top Two: the US is leading Greece with 2.5:1, while Greece is leading the rest with 7:1. Ireland has had an impressive last week and is now in 3d place. Russia has also gained strength and is a clear 4th. Canada's constant presence lands at #5, separated by just 1 visit from Germany, which is 6th, which in turn is separated by 2 visits with the UK, which has fallen to 7th. 3 countries equally occupy #8, to complete the Top 10: Spain, France and the United Arab Emirates. There were also strong showings from Singapore, India and Chile, as well as visits from Switzerland, Austria, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Sweden, Poland, Montenegro, Venezuela, Cyprus, Portugal, Thailand, Italy, Indonesia, Mexico, Brazil, Australia and Myanmar/Burma.

On the all-time Top 10, the US lead Greece by 2.2:1, while Greece leads the rest by 8.6:1. There's a big fight for 3d place: Germany and the UK have been battling for it all through this period. Right now, Germany is ahead by just one visit. This should be interesting.

Another big battle is for places 5 & 6, between Ireland and Canada: Ireland has now overtaken Canada by 3 visits and is just 7 visits behind the UK. So, everything can happen in place 3-6.

Russia has been showing forward momentum and sits comfortably alone at #7, with 27 visits more than France, which is at #8, but also 44 visits less than Canada, which is at #6. We'll have to wait and see how this plays out. At #9 is Cyprus, which has been quite inactive lately, just 2 visits more than the two countries in a tie at #10: Australia and Spain. That's it for the statistics.

Since I've probably given you a headache with all these numbers, I will leave you with a song that is not gay-themed, but it tackles the universal theme of nostalgia for a time long lost. It's among the 5 most covered songs of all time and this version is my favorite. The master crooner Nat 'King' Cole and Stardust:

  1. It is one of my all time favorite songs. Manilow did a good version, too.

    1. Thanks RM! I too like the BM version. The NKC one is my absolute favorite though. I don't think that a young singer can really do justice to this song. The line "but that was long ago..." has to carry the emotional weight of a person who is past his prime and looks back wistfully on his past. What do you think?

  2. Not sure if you're referring to Manilow in your comment about it being an older person's song but actually, NKC was around 37 when he recorded Stardust and Manilow was in his early 40s when he did it. But I get what you mean. Take a song like the gorgeous It Was A Very Good Year. Sinatra was 50 when he recorded it and the sentiments are befitting of a middle aged person looking back on his life. I doubt it would be as successful in the hands of Bieber, though I suppose a good vocalist should be able to sing almost anything.

    1. No, I didn't mean BM. My thought was particular to the song. IWAVGY is another good example of this.

As far as the age thing goes, don't forget that in 1957, when Cole sang Stardust, 37 was well into middle age, probably today's equivalent of 55-60. Indeed, the poor man died 8 years later.
