Lewis Furey,
born Lewis Greenblatt, 1949, is
a Canadian musician and artist of stage, film and TV.
Born in Montreal, he trained as a classical violinist
and at 11 he was already a soloist. He then went to Juilliard in NYC to study.
In the 70s, back in Canada, he released 3 Pop albums. The main body of his work
however, are numerous film scores. In some of these movies he also took part as
an actor.
The day before yesterday, as we were examining Cabaret
79 by Tom Robinson, we mentioned an interesting cover version of a song
included in Lewis' album of 1975, called Closing A Door. In the introduction, Tom
mentions another song from the same album, called Hustler's Tango. It begins with
this verse:
you say you want to rape
rape
me baby
and well you know you've got
you've got to pay pay
the match is fixed, setup
setup all ready
you're going to wrestle with
with an angel
In yet the same album, there's also a song called Last
Night. It begins like this:
i've always had the feeling
i'm a tourist in town
picking up boys
faking a love
and then just letting them down
ready to give
any pretty thing a whirl
sometimes i go to thinking
i was unnatural
a mean old churl
i made out in the scenes
that i wanted to make
but i was feeling unholy
on the take
what to do
And this is the video:
Certainly an unusual artist, especially for his era.
