Finally
for now, from Sing Street, here's Drive It Like You Stole It:
Lucy Williams is an old friend from college, so it's always good to see her name. If "La La Land" had been able to maintain the energy level of John Legend's "Start a Fire," they'd have had a better movie. And I like just about everything about "Sing Street," but I think I'm going with "Can't Stop the Feeling." As if having the number one song of last year isn't enough for Justin Timberlake!
ReplyDeleteSo you're a friend of Lucinda Williams, AFHI. I am impressed! I like her discography in general and this song in particular. I also like the songs by Ben Nichols, the late Sharon Jones, and the quirky EMMI.
DeleteIt is a more impressive list than usual! "City of Stars" is probably a shoo-in, but maybe not.
DeleteIt is indeed a more impressive list than usual, and I wouldn't mind seeing some surprises. It's not so much which songs are the best, it's which ones will be heard by the voters. Let's hope that they listen to the right ones.
DeleteThis is a bit off subject, but I just learned that they've made a new film based on the life of Dalida. That's exciting enough, but it costars my favorite Italian actor, Riccardo Scamarcio, who also starred in my favorite gay film of the past decade, "Mine Viganti." Here's an audio clip of Dalida and Alain Delon singing "Paroles, Paroles":

And here's Nina Zilli's "50mila," from the film "Mine; Vaganti" ("Loose Cannons") with clips from the film:

Sorry, but I never pass up an opportunity to promote this!
I had seen a Dalida biopic made in 2005 starring, among others, Charles Berling, Christopher Lambert, and Alessandro Gassman. It was quite good. Paroles, Paroles is a song that I love, although I love the Mina version just a little bit more than the one by Dalida. By the way, you do know that I have presented Dalida on this blog, don't you? I believe that it was during the summer.
DeleteMine Vaganti its one of my favorite films of the last decade too (my grade: 9/10). I love most of the films by this very talented Turkish-Italian director, Ferzan Ozpetek. As well as Mine Vagrant there are La Finestra Di Fronte, Saturn Contro, Le Fate Ignoranti, and Hamam.
Riccardo Scamarcio was also excellent in My Brother Is An Only Child and Eden Is West. Have a great weekend, AFHI!
Scamarcio apparently plays the gay brother of Dalida that you mention on your blog. He was also in the recent "London Spy" (he played Ben Whishaw's "Doppelgänger" and will be in next month's "John Wick: Chapter 2," with Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, and Franco Nero. He plays an assassin!
DeleteOh yes, I had forgotten about London Spy. I wish this guy a long and fruitful career. He is very talented and he oozes sex appeal!
DeleteFrom this list I'm most impressed with woodkid, Ellie Goulding, Rooney and the Sing Street tune. Therefore, I'm pretty sure none of them will make it.
ReplyDeleteSo, between your choices and mine, RM, we have all of today's selections covered, except for the apparent favorites, the songs from La La Land.
DeleteHave a great weekend!
