Mother's Day: The Highest Charting Mom-themed Songs in the UK, part 2 & This Week's Statistics

Hello again! It’s Mother's Day today in Britain, so the UK Official Charts Company delved into the archive of every song that ever charted in the UK to see which mum-related tunes made it to the upper reaches. So, let’s all toast our mothers and play every song that made the UK Top 40 that has a variation of “mother” in its title. Let’s go!

Pixie Lott
Before we carry on with the countdown, here are the rest of the songs that I personally picked up as “extras”.

Yesterday we listened to two songs called Mama Said. My favorite song with that title, however, wasn’t a hit in the UK, although it was a top 10 hit in the US in 1961. It’s the Shirelles:

Here’s another title that will appear three times – all of which will be outside the main list: Mother Dear. The Supremes recorded it in 1965 with the intention of releasing it as a single but it was scrapped in favor of Nothing But Heartaches. It’s this:

A song with the same title was also a fan-favorite album track from Barclay James Harvest’s eponymous album in 1970:

Finally, a song with the same title was an album track for the 2008 Tindersticks’ album The Hungry Saw:

Brett Anderson was the lead singer of Suede. His eponymous solo album (2007) was reissued with two bonus tracks, one of which was Mother Night:

Marc Almond’s Mother Fist is probably not the song that you would dedicate to your mother:

… You would feel more comfortable dedicating Kate Bush’s Mother Stands For Comfort:

Rachael Yamagata began her musical career with the band Bumpus before becoming a solo artist. I Don't Want To Be Your Mother is found on her 2011 solo album, Chesapeake:

Fresh Air For My Mama is the closing track of 10CC’s eponymous debut album from 1973:

Momma’s Little Jewel is the second track on Mott The Hoople’s breakthrough album, All The Young Dudes (1972), produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson:

The last of our extras is the shortest title we will encounter; it’s simply called Ma – and it’s the title track on Rare Earth’s 1973 album. It’s also the longest track we will encounter:

Now, let’s go back to our list: 34 hits remain. Here they are.

Since we’ve already heard this a while back, let’s listen to some other “mother” songs that weren’t hits in the UK but are definitely worth a listen. Let’s begin by some that are not in English.

Mamãe Eu Quero was a Brazilian hit originally co-written and recorded by Jararaca in 1937. It was, however, Carmen Miranda who made the song an international hit 3 years later:

Oscar winner Μάνος Χατζιδάκις (Manos Hatzidakis) wrote Μανούλα μου (My Little Mother). The song was sung by many but the original version was by Λάκης Παππάς (Lakis Pappas):

Moving on to Italy, in 1971, Gigliola Cinquetti had a hit with Mamma Mia Dammi Cento Lire:

At that same year, Albano had a hit with Mamma Rosa:

We end our short tour of non-English speaking “mother” songs with a song from France. In 1977, France Gall recorded Si Maman Si:

Back to the English-speaking songs – let’s listen to some of my favorites. One of the most moving George Michael songs, esp. for us gays, is My Mother Had A Brother:

One of John Lennon’s most raw and heartbreaking songs was Mother:

His partner-in-crime, Paul McCartney penned Mother Nature’s Son for the Beatles’ White Album:

It was a hit in the US by John Denver:

Pink Floyd’s Mother is cynical and thought-provoking:

Bob Dylan’s It’s Alright Ma (I’m Only Bleeding) is one of his most powerful songs:

The Rolling Stones Mother’s Little Helper was a top 10 hit in the US:

Finally for today, since we’ve listened to both the Beatles and the Stones, here’s a song by another of the greatest British groups of the 60s: it’s the Kinks with Mindless Child Of Motherhood:

The rest of the songs will appear in a day or so – do come back to hear the biggest hits on the lists, as well as more important “mother” songs that weren’t released as singles. Until then!
